GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Public Works Director and/or City Manager, supervises and is responsible for daily operations of Streets & Equipment Division and Refuse Division, within the Public Works Department. Supervises all street, shop, and refuse personnel. Ensures maintenance and operational capabilities of all light and heavy equipment of the City of Cordova, AK. Performs landfill management and planning, ensures compliance with State & Federal regulations, completes and submits grant applications, and performs other duties necessary for the efficient operation of the assigned divisions. Supervises cemetery maintenance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for job related training. Develops work schedules and manages daily activities.
- Implements personnel policies, rules, and regulations.
- Evaluates employee performance.
- Management level involvement in hiring, firing, and discipline of employees.
- Participates in the grievance procedures as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Directly accountable for safety training and accident prevention results.
- Develops and administers annual division budgets in communication with the Public Works Director, Finance Director, and City Manager.
- Responds to work order requests and delegates tasks to appropriate personnel. Ensures that necessary equipment and materials are available for projects.
- Supervises ordering of materials, equipment, and supplies necessary for daily operations and completion of projects.
- Supervises and prioritizes street maintenance, equipment, refuse, and cemetery maintenance tasks. Develops and manages schedules, ensures compliance with DEC permitting process and requirements, performs landfill management, schedules cemetery maintenance, and supervises the digging and covering of graves.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as heavy equipment operator, truck driver, or similar duties. Five years management or supervisory experience preferred.
- High School graduate or G.E.D. required. Post-Secondary education preferred.
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance and repair required. Experience as a heavy equipment and/or truck mechanic is a plus.
- Knowledge of refuse operations and landfill management preferred.
- Possession of a valid Alaska CDL required; Minimum Class B, in good standing.
- Knowledge of operation of vehicles, equipment, hand tools, and power tools in a safe and proper manner.
