General Description: This is an appointed position that serves at and for the pleasure of the mayor and, as such, is an at will employee. This is a department head position with overall responsibility for all operations of the police department and the supervision of police department personnel through his/her subordinate officers. The police chief's duties are administrative in nature. However, supervision of operational tasks may be required.
- Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminology, law enforcement, criminal justice, police science/administration or related field of study;
- Possess an Alaska Police Standards Council Advanced Certificate with at least two (2) years at the rank of lieutenant or at least four (4) years at the rank of sergeant;
- Through an applicable testing process established by the hiring authority, be able to demonstrate the ability, or the potential ability, to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position;
- Must pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment with the North Pole Police Department and, if required, must pass a written and oral exam, a physical fitness exam, a medical exam, drug testing, a polygraph and psychological testing;
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alaska Driver’s License and;
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays or evenings when necessary in order to accomplish the essential functions of the position.
Substitution: A combination of applicable training and experience may be substituted for the education requirements on a year-for-year basis.
