Port Director, City of Unalaska

Description:
This executive level position functions as the general manager of the Port Department of the City of Unalaska under the general direction of the City Manager.  This position manages and operates City-owned marine facilities and the airport terminal building, and performs marine search and rescue services and marine assists with its patrol vessel.  The Director is also responsible for the profitable management of two enterprise funds, the Port Enterprise Fund and the Airport Enterprise Fund.  The position participates in the team management of port related capital projects.  Supervises all matters related to the management, planning, operation, engineering and maintenance of the City’s port facilities.


Qualifications: 
The director will have significant interaction with other marine operators and support sector businesses and agencies to ensure the highest quality services are delivered to the public.  The new director will have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated leadership abilities, and the ability to coordinate activities in the busiest commercial fishing port in the nation.  Knowledge of the principles and practices of emergency management and emergency management coordination.  Knowledge of principles and practices of public administration and management, including budgeting, fiscal control, program planning and development and strategic planning.

A four-year degree in maritime management, business administration, public administration, or related field.  Must have extensive knowledge of local, state and federal maritime regulations. Must have experience in budget and contract administration..  A minimum of ten years experience in the marine industry with at least five years at the supervisory level and three years in an executive management position is required .  Experience in capital project development a must. Alaskan experience a plus. Construction management or marine engineering preferred. 

Must have a valid Alaska Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days.  As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to submit to a background check, and successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening prior to beginning work.
