Assistant City Manager

The City of Valdez is accepting applications for the
position of Assistant City Manager. The
City of Valdez, population approx 4000, is
located in South Central Alaska on Prince William Sound. It has a relatively mild climate, due to the
marine currents and weather of the Pacific Ocean. Its distinguishing characteristics are the
incomparable rugged beauty of its natural mountain ringed setting, and its
extremely high average annual snowfall of almost 30 feet. The City of Valdez is a home rule city, operating under a
Council-Manager form of government
Wage: Salary
range: $80,000 – DOE, with excellent benefits
General
Description:
The assistant city manager position is a
full-time, exempt position whose primary duties and responsibilities include:
- Human Resources
Manager
- Maintains/updates
personnel regs
- Monitors and
tracks state and federal legislation
- Liaison to
external groups and organizations as assigned
- Monitors
city-wide grant program
- Monitors city
procurement practice/procedures
- Member of the
budget committee (helps draft and monitor the annual budget)
- Manages
contracts as assigned
- Conducts project
management as assigned
- Participates in
economic development planning/initiatives
- Participates in
community and organization strategic planning
- Assists with
community outreach program
- Provides general
oversight and assistance for all city departments and functions
- Assumes acting
city manager role during the absence of the city manager
- Other duties as
assigned by the city manager
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s
degree in public or business administration or related field
·
4
years of progressively responsible management experience to include
supervision, budgeting, human resources, municipal operations/finance, and
public relations
·
Understanding
of grant management, capital projects, contracts and contract administration, municipal
budgets, National Incident Command System (NIMS), strategic planning, and
economic development concepts
·
Experience
in human resource practices and principals
·
Strong
written and verbal communication skills
·
Aptitude
toward problem solving, conflict resolution, team focus, and customer service
