Library Aide/On-Call

Department:                          Library – South Naknek, Ak

Immediate Supervisor:         Library Director

Positions Supervised:            None (unless assigned)

Step Classifications:               Hourly G – 12 $33.19 (No Benefits)

Qualifications:

Be 18 years of age or higher. Have a High School diploma or equivalent or some college.  Hold valid State of Alaska driver’s license or readily obtain an Alaska State driver’s license. Pass a pre-employment drug test.

Knowledge of Alaska in general, the local area and its general history is desirable. Knowledge of a library environment, duties and functions, is desirable, but not a prerequisite. Have an energetic and or helpful nature and aptitude to perform the duties and tasks of operating a library system.

Responsibilities:

On-call library aides, hours may vary. The on-call casual employee performs clerical and customer service duties in support of the day to day functions, its operations, programs and services of a public library in the Borough library system. The library serves a wide variety of patrons and ages, within a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds.

Work may include some evenings and weekends. Employee may work with little to no supervision, and occasionally oversee the library in the absence of the branch supervisor.

Work requires concentration to complete tasks sometimes in a fast-paced setting, with frequent interruptions to assist with inquiries, while performing multiple tasks.

Work in a quiet to moderate and occasionally louder noise levels, depending on work location, season and time of day.
Regularly sit for long periods.
Regularly reach, lift and move arms above shoulder level.
Continuous and repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
Verbally communicate and listen for lengthy periods of time.
Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Occasion travel to/from to various locations may be applicable for library functions and training.
The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds.
The employee will on occasion move wheeled book carts up to 50 pounds.
The employee will on occasion, lift heavier items such as: tables, chairs, equipment, furniture and lift or move heavy boxes to and from the post office, supplies for meetings, workshops and programs. (weight varies)
Duties/Responsibilities

•        Open and close the library, relating to library scheduled hours worked.

•        Start up and shut down the library facility’s equipment according to daily operations.

•        Perform clerical duties.

•        Sort library material, and shelve material.

•        Keep the library facility and equipment clean and organized.

•        Retrieves books from book drop, at opening, closing and throughout the day.

•        Process, mend and clean materials.

•        Deliver and retrieve items to and from departments.

•        Perform errands.

•        Handle inter-library loans, as assigned.

•        Prepare items to be mailed, affix labels, and stamps for mailing.

•        Contact patrons regarding overdue items.

•        Receive, and verify orders, copy, organize and file, as assigned.

•        Review material and recommend additions and deletions to collections.

•        Perform all circulation desk duties.

•        Perform assigned duties related to the circulation desk, including entering and editing and cataloging of library materials.

•        Assist with the acquisition of library materials and other operating expenditures, as assigned.

•        Maintain the library environment as a hospitable setting and its collection in an aesthetically appealing manner for both patrons and staff.

•        Answer general questions from customers and staff, referring the more complex inquiries to the appropriate staff members.

•        Instruct and or assist customers how to locate information, use library and technology equipment, access computers and internet.

•        Assist users on how to access public computers, the Wi-Fi services, including registering, reserving, printing and basic searches.

·         Maintain the general office supplies, example: paper trays, tape, staples,

adhesives, colored print cartridges, and paperclips.

·         Assists patrons at the circulation desk; checks materials in and out; places holds on materials; collects and computes monies for copies, faxes, fines, and lost or damaged items; issues library cards; assists patrons in locating materials in the collection.

·         Receives and processes new materials manually and or electronically; appends barcodes, spine labels, identification stamps, and protective covers; as assigned.

·         May manually or electronically catalog and classify library materials and resources, as assigned.

·         Enters statistical information regarding library operations.

·         Assists patrons with all aspects of the library, referring the more complex needs or requests to other library staff.

·         Operates computers, printers, copiers, facsimile machine, telephones, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential library functions, to include the use of word processing, databases or other system software.

•        Be comfortable to speak in small to larger groups, including community functions.

•        Work on all types and aspects of library programming, as assigned.

•        Set up and clean up for programs and specialty event space, assist presenter(s), as assigned and ensure that both the presenter and customers have a pleasant experience.

•        Take direction from supervisor or the direction of other staff assigned by the supervisor.

•        Exercise good independent judgement in accomplishing tasks assigned; to communicate effectively, professionally, and courteously with the public, establish good relations with those contacted in the course of work; and to work as team member.

•        Monitor the library facility, public computer terminals, patron usage, and its grounds for safety, security and maintenance as assigned or see the need.

•        For the safety of library operations and or visitors, employee may need to explain or enforce library rules and policies diplomatically, while using good sound judgement.

•        Maintain composure in highly stressful or adverse situations.

•        Be tactful and respectful when handling challenging patron or interpersonal situations.

•        Be self-motivated.

•        Be punctual, reliable and responsible.

•        Dress code may be applied; as well for themed programs.

•        Follow in-house Library rules, policies and procedures.

·         Oversee the library during the absence of the branch supervisor.

·         On occasion duties may include the use of a broom to clear debris or the removal

of snow using a shovel, or placing of sand or ice melt onto the walkway and library entrances.

·         Perform light custodial duties, as needed.

·         Adhere to library patron confidentiality standard practices.

·         Perform other library job related duties as assigned.
