AML applauds the Legislature’s investments in communities during this period of high fuel costs. In response to challenges identified by AML member testimony and that of Alaskans, a number of bills and funding allocations are directed toward helping local governments, schools, utilities, residents, and businesses navigate a high price environment. The role of the State is critical, and every dollar saved at the local level will help continued important services that Alaskans depend on.
In particular, we want to highlight the following, keeping in mind that many communities will face increased energy costs of between 30-50%:
- $29 million will be available to all school districts to address their bulk fuel and heating oil needs, avoiding further reduction to the workforce.
- A $20 million increase in Community Assistance for local governments to assist in their bulk fuel, power, fleet management, and facility needs.
- Even things like fully funding Community Jails means that local governments don’t have to make choices between energy and public safety.
- Legislation that increased access to and the amount that can be borrowed from the State’s bulk fuel revolving loan fund.
That’s not to mention the $127.3 million in energy relief that will directly benefit every Alaskan.
While the State’s budget benefits from high oil prices, the budget and bills adopted by the Legislature kept in mind the impact on Alaskans and Alaska communities. They’ll keep the lights on, and provide the support needed to deliver on Alaska’s promises and potential.
