AML Alaska Community Connectivity Action Plan (ACCAP) Project

The vision of the transportation and land use team is that we will improve physical connectivity and accessibility across Alaska, especially for remote and underserved communities. By upgrading roads, boardroads, ports, and transit systems, these initiatives will boost economic development and support the efficient movement of people and goods. Thoughtful land use planning will help preserve natural resources while promoting smart growth and sustainable development. These projects will enhance quality of life and build stronger, more connected communities throughout the state.

Project Information

What is ACCAP?

A statewide planning process to identify the gaps and barriers to transportation access for communities across the state. ACCAP provides statewide data, analysis, and planning tools that communities and transportation agencies can use to understand and advance locally identified transportation priorities.

Plan

To address gaps in regional and statewide connectivity and provide a set of actions to improve community well-being, including better access to regional services and increased affordability.

Partners

DOT&PF, Alaska Municipal League, Federal Land Management Agencies, Denali Commission.

Process

Transportation system analysis, multimodal project planning, community engagement, and integration with DOT&PF and municipal planning processes.

Deliverables

This project will result in a community-driven plan that highlights gaps in inter-community access and provides a prioritized list of strategies to address those gaps. An interactive GIS map will identify the various options for transportation within and between Alaskan communities and identify the barriers to accessing essential services from each community. The accompanying report will document community perspectives on transportation and transit and place regional concerns in the context of statewide connectivity. The results of this planning process are intended for use by municipal, tribal, and regional planning organizations. This plan will also inform the DOT&PF family of plans by providing strategies to address gaps in regional connectivity and informing project selection. ACCAP findings will be incorporated into the statewide Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), regional plans, and other relevant plans.
